September MEETING — Wednesday, September 3rd - Mark Lance - Tango Trout!

ImageYep . . . We're back in business with the first of our fall BFC monthly meeting schedule and we couldn't be happier with the line-up for this fall. Terry Escamilla, program chairman, has outdone himself this time and starting off with Mark Lance is a major step forward.

Mark Lance - Freelance Photographer,

The rivers flowing from Argentina’s Andean Cordillera offer a wide variety of fly fishing opportunities. Some liken the fly fishing experience to western Montana 50 years ago. The semi-arid landscape of the Argentine steppe and brawling freestone rivers do remind one of the Rocky Mountain west. However, the magnificent Andes as a backdrop and unfamiliar names like Rio Chimehuin, Rio Collon Cura, and Rio Limay take us to a fly fishing paradise at 40 degrees south latitude in a land of late night asados, deep red Malbec wines and the Tango. Through Mark’s compelling photography you will experience the quest for rainbow and brown trout across sprawling estancias and wilderness waters in Argentina’s Neuquen and Rio Negro provinces.

Mark Lance ...

Mark has been chasing fish with a fly rod for well over 40 years and by less graceful methods for a good many years before discovering the spectacle of trout sipping a Royal Wulff off the surface of a cold rushing Rocky Mountain stream. Panfish or sailfish on a fly rod are equally attractive on any given day. It is the locale and the cast of characters that are indelibly etched in the mind over the years.

Mark is a freelance photographer and outdoor writer. His stock photography business, River Light Images, is committed to capturing compelling visions of fly fishing, travel and the environment that ties us all together. His fly-fishing photography represents outdoor manufacturers and outfitters in catalogs and advertising, and is frequently featured in Southwest Fly Fishing, Grays Sporting Journal, Fly Rod & Reel, Trout Magazine, American Angler and Saltwater Fly Fisherman. He is currently the Rocky Mountain field editor for Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine.

Mark is on the pro staff for Scott Fly Rods, Hatch Reels, and Hyde Drift Boats. He is a long time supporter of Trout Unlimited in Colorado. He lives in Centennial, Colorado with his wife Sharon. A sample of Mark’s photography can be viewed on his website at www.riverlightimages.com.

Film Tour - "Silent Auction Items" at the Dairy Center

by Bob Bush

We're very excited with the Film Tour and even more excited with the silent auction offerings we've compiled for your auction pleasure. Heading the list of choices are two rod and reel sets consisting of Ross Evolution Reels matched to G•Loomis Max GLX, 4 and 6 weight, fly rods.

Details of the Ross Evolution Reels include:
The Evolution is a high end hybrid large arbor fly reel that is a machining masterpiece. The first time you pick up the Evolution you will know right away that this reel defines perfection in every way. This series was designed for those anglers who equally appreciate art and function. The cosmetic innovation and precision workmanship of the Evolution series is only surpassed by its drag system which is precise and sensitive - capable of protecting the lightest tippets even when battling world-class fish. To guarantee the level of dependability consumers have come to expect from all Ross products, we have designed a drag system for the Evolution series that has triple redundancy; providing for three backup drag systems and thereby guaranteeing dependability under the most demanding fishing conditions. The spoke designed frame and extensive spool ventilation make this series incredibly lightweight, yet the Evolution is built to endure a lifetime of flawless performance. Each reel in this series is designed with a specific diameter and width to maximize the properties of drag consistency and quick line retrieval. The Evolution series is truly art in motion, and will satisfy the demands of the most discriminating angler.

Details of the G•Loomis rod includes:
Max GLX:
The Max GLX are the result of the need for ultimate speed and control under the most demanding casting and fishing conditions. Ideally suited to casters that demand fast cycle time, these rods have the extra-stiff action and fast taper needed to push streamers to pockets while drifting the river in a raft or drift boat. Also excellent for long line nymphing with split shot and indicator, or to make a tight cast into a stiff wind. When you want to take control no matter the conditions the Max GLX is your rod.

Each rod & reel set are valued at more than $1,000.00 and silent auction bids will begin at $675.00 (a bargain at that price, alone.)

Other items are still being collected, but one trip that bears mentioning is the two days of guided access for two anglers as well as one night accommodations at the riverside cabin on the Grand River Ranch, just below Wolford reservoir, near Kremmling. Several miles of river access and a great lake are included in the trip. The value of this trip is undetermined as it's impossible to get on the water unless you're a member and own property, but I have fished it prior to it being developed recently by the Gallagher family and the fishing, especially dry fly fishing is out of this world . . . big fish and lots of 'em!

We still have a number of BFC hats and shirts available for purchase along with a special selection of wading "Crocs" designed to use in lakes and streams. These unusual shoes offer anglers access to the water without losing them as with normal Crocs float away from the wearer in fast flowing water! We have a small selection of sizes available and they cannot be purched locally!

Film Tour - "Destinations"

Image
by Bob Bush

“Destinations”
Beattie Outdoor Productions, fishwithra.com
The short film “Destinations” was created solely for the Fly Fishing Film Festival and
is a compilation of three films; Slovenia on the Fly, Bird Chasers and First Descent
Alaska. The film is a whirlwind fly fishing world tour, stopping in Slovenia, Alaska and
North Carolina. The piece begins with a look at the rare Marble Trout and the Hucho,
close relative of the Mongolian Taimen - jumps to the first recorded descent of a river
in Alaska - then finishes with one of the fastest fish on the planet, the False Albacore.
Each section of the film combines stunning images with a strong story line, giving the
viewer fish porn and a narrative...the best of both worlds. While many people travel
the world in search of locations with bigger, easier fish to catch, this film focuses on
destinations that demand more from the fishermen. Caution: this film will make you
want to fish.

"Travels With Howard" . . . Help Boulder Flycasters by Helping the Family of Howard Cox!

Imageby Larry Quilling.

(Picture, at left, shows Howard (left) and his son, Wes, at a BFC meeting last year.)

Dear Boulder Flycasters,

Paul Prentiss and I were recently contacted by the children of Howard Cox informing us of their father’s recent death and his last wishes. Howard was a long time BFC member and he asked for a portion of his ashes to be divided into 100 small bags and provided to CTU. It is Howard Cox’s wish that a portion of his ashes be scattered by CTU members on our respective fishing trips, and a letter or postcard be written to his family telling them about when and where the trip was taken and a few comments about the special aspects of the trip.

In honor of Howard’s request and as a respected member of our club, we will be taking on his challenge to scatter his ashes throughout our fishing destinations over the next few weeks. As CTU receives contributions in from the BFC efforts, those dollars will be placed into a dedicated fund for Rogers Park which we can tap for project expenses. Our BFC board of directors is taking it upon ourselves to scatter Howard’s remains in as many close and exotic locations as possible. Paul Prentiss is taking envelopes on his trip to Mongolia and I have taken more to scatter through Idaho and Montana as we take our daughter to Gonzaga in Spokane for college. I recently completed an extended weekend fishing trip where I scattered Howard’s ashes in six different Front Range locations. Please watch our newsletters this fall where we will be chronicling the fishing trips where Howard’s wishes are fulfilled.

We plan to use the donations from Howard’s special gifts to help fund our Rogers Park restoration project on Boulder Creek. We will plan to make a scattering of his ashes as part of our ground breaking ceremony later this fall. Please let me know if anyone would be interested in helping us complete this effort for the Cox family and participate. Envelopes can be obtained from me whenever you are scheduling your next fishing adventure.

Detailed below is a copy of Howard’s instructions placed on each envelope containing a portion of his ashes:

Each reported trip to a Colorado location by a CTU member shall earn CTU a bonus gift of $75.00. Each reported trip to a “Lower 48 states” location shall earn a bonus special gift of $100.00. Each reported trip to the outside of the “Lower 48 states” shall earn CTU a bonus special gift of $150.00.

Letters/postcards to the family may be sent to: (Please copy Larry Quilling at 1255 Berea Drive, Boulder, CO 80305)

Jack L. Cox
301 Reata Ave.
Ventura, CA 93004

This scattering of ashes and subsequent letter should be done by January 1, 2009
